To all dear friends of Samye Ling and Choje Akong Tulku Rinpoche

I am very, very sorry to inform you all that tragically, my brother Choje Akong Rinpoche, my nephew and one monk who was travelling with then, were all assassinated in Chengdu today. Rinpoche’s body has been taken to hospital where a post mortem will be carried out. That is all the news I have so far. If I receive further news I will let you know.

My nephew Kating Lama has been able to inform His Holiness Karmapa’s sister who has informed H H Karmapa, H H Dalai Lama and Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa and they are all saying prayers.

We will have to do a lot of special prayers and make a lot of appropriate offerings on Rinpoche’s behalf and any contributions you wish to make in his name will be much appreciated.

I request you all to do whatever prayers you can.
With best wishes,
Lama Yeshe Rinpoche

Hei,

Viime päivinä monesta eri suunnasta eteeni on tullut uutisia Lumbinin arkeologisista löydöistä. Vaikuttaa siltä, että työryhmä on löytänyt jotain yli 2500 vuotta vanhoja jäänteitä, jotka ovat mahdollisesti peräisin Buddhan syntymäpaikalta.

"
Religious roots of Buddha's birthplace traced back 2,600 years

"This is one of those rare occasions when belief, traditions, archaeology and science come together," Coningham said.

Henkilökohtaisesti suhtaudun tähänkin löytöön hiukan skeptisesti. National Geographic kanavalta on tulossa helmikuussa aiheeseen liittyvä dokumentti "Buried Secrets of the Buddha".

The Dalai Lama has told a German newspaper that he should be the last Tibetan spiritual leader, ending a centuries-old religious tradition from his Himalayan homeland.

His comments to the Welt am Sonntag newspaper echo his previous statement that "the institution of the Dalai Lama has served its purpose", but were even more explicit.

"We had a Dalai Lama for almost five centuries. The 14th Dalai Lama now is very popular. Let us then finish with a popular Dalai Lama," he said.

"If a weak Dalai Lama comes along, then it will just disgrace the Dalai Lama," he added with a laugh, according to a transcript of the English language interview.

He also said: "Tibetan Buddhism is not dependent on one individual. We have a very good organisational structure with highly trained monks and scholars."

China has governed Tibet since 1951, a year after invading, and the Dalai Lama fled across the Himalayas to India after a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese rule.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2011 retired from political duties and has upgraded the role of prime minister of the Tibetan exile community.

But he is still the most powerful rallying point for Tibetans, both in exile and in their homeland, and remains the universally recognised face of the movement.

Asked by the German newspaper how much longer he may carry on his advocacy duties, the 79-year-old said: "The doctors say I could become 100 years old. But in my dreams I will die at the age of 113 years.

"I hope and pray that I may return to this world as long as sentient beings' suffering remains. I mean not in the same body, but with the same spirit and the same soul."

On the question of whether he may ever be able to return to Tibet, he said: "Yes, I am sure of that. China can no longer isolate itself, it must follow the global trend towards a democratic society."

Tibetan Buddhist Sect Seeks Indian Intervention

NEW DELHI: While Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping were on a swing along the Sabarmati and their respective Armies continued a face-off in Ladakh, the leader of a Buddhist sect on Wednesday sought help from the Indian government to stop his monasteries in Tibet from being taken over by a richer, rival sect, allegedly backed by the Beijing.

Breaking his silence, Jigme Pema Wanghcen, head of 1,000-year-old Drukpa lineage school, also known as Gyalwang Drukpa, told Express about the “conversion” by the Karma Kagyu school. However, the latter strenuously rejected the claims, saying there was no such campaign or orders from their leader, the 17th Karmapa. Drukpa was here on Wednesday to address a seminar on Buddhist tourism.

Drukpa, who has 25 million followers world-wide, told Express on the “disturbing trend” of his monasteries in Tibet, ringing Mount Kailash, being taken over by powerful Karma Kagyu sect. “This has been going on for the past 15-16 years. But, we didn’t speak as we didn’t want to escalate the situation… We were hoping that they would realise what they are doing is bad. But, nothing happened, so we have to speak out now,” Gyalwang Drukpa said.

His office had issued a statement earlier this month, but this is the first time that Drukpa is publicly talking about the issue. He claimed that 12 of his monasteries have been converted “forcibly”, starting with the Dri-ra Phug monastery 15 years ago. This means that slowly through donations from Karma Kagyu followers, monasteries were taken over, the drukpa emblem obliterated and the sect leaders’ photos removed. His followers, numbering around two million across the Himalayas, were reportedly told to ‘convert’ to the Karma Kagyu school or face expulsion.

“There is a strong rumour that all of this is being done with funds from the Chinese government,” he said.

However, he was cautious in imputing any motive to the Chinese government. “We are still trying to find out from the ground on what could be the motive behind this,” he said. China, of course, maintains overall control over monasteries and monks in Tibet with many of them being the nursery for leading the struggle for autonomy in the region.

He emphasised that this was a matter which India had to take cognisance as for centuries, his followers had been the guardians of the Himalayan frontier.

“You know how sensitive the border is… especially now,” said Gyalwang Drukpa, an Indian citizen.

In May, Department of Posts released a special commemorative stamp to mark 1,000 years of Drukpa lineage. The Buddhist spiritual leaderis planning to raise the issue with the Indian authorities.

“India has a big role to play,” he said. When asked as to why the the issue was raised during the Chinese President’s visit, he said, “it is a pure coincidence”.

Charges Denied

The Karma Kagyu sect is led by 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, who escaped to India from Tibet at the age of 15 in 2000. His spokesperson Kunzang Chungyalpa said that they were not aware of the allegations made by the Drukpa sect. “We have no such knowledge, so we want to verify them ourselves and ask for reports from there. But, His Holiness has not given any such orders for conversion. He has a non-sectarian approach,” Chungalypa said.

US Ebola patient Ashoka Mukpo once hailed as reincarnated lama

The photojournalist and NBC freelancer was trying to raise awareness about the virus when infected with Ebola in Liberia

A passion for Liberia and the plight of its people drove Ashoka Mukpo to work there, first to aid relief efforts and then as a photojournalist to tell its story. But Mukpo has an unusual story of his own: As an infant, he was identified as a reincarnated Tibetan lama, a role he chose not to pursue.

His mother, Diana Mukpo, comes from an upper-class aristocratic family in Britain. At age 16, she left boarding school in Scotland and married Tibetan Buddhist leader Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who founded the Shambhala community that spread Buddhism in the west. She was one of several wives.

Our Beloved Teacher in Hospital

Plum Village, November 12, 2014

To all Plum Village Practice Centers,
To all Practice Centers and Sanghas World Wide,
To our Dear Beloved Friends,

With a deep mindful breath we announce to the world the news that yesterday, the 11th of November 2014 Thay, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, experienced a severe brain hemorrhage. Thay is receiving 24 hour intensive care from specialist doctors, nurses and from his monastic disciples.

At present, Thay is still very responsive and shows every indication of being aware of the presence of those around him. He is able to move his feet, hands and eyes. There are signs that a full recovery may be possible.

For the last two months, Thay’s health had already been fragile due to his advanced age. He was hospitalized in Bordeaux on the 1st of November. He was gaining strength day by day until this sudden and unexpected change in his condition.

All the monasteries in the tradition of Plum Village are organizing practice sessions to generate the energy of mindfulness and to send Thay this healing and loving energy. We would like to ask the whole worldwide community of meditation practitioners to participate and support us in this critical moment. We know and trust that Thay will receive all your energy and that this will be a big support in his healing and recovery.

Our practice of stability and peace in this very moment is the best support we can offer to Thay. Let us all around the world take refuge in our practice, going together as a river to offer Thay our powerful collective energy. We are all cells of the great Sangha Body that Thay has manifested in his lifetime.

Future reports on Thay health and recovery will be posted officially at www.plumvillage.org, langmai.org, villagedespruniers.org, and www.facebook.com/thichnhathanh.
