In this monastery, Wat Buddha Dhamma, we usually have a bottle of olive oil available to be taken as a medicine in the afternoon. Today while I was reading the label ’Extra Virgin’ I became suspicious. The whole wording just sounds like a magnet for abuse. And sure enough, when I looked into the matter, there’s a long history of misuse of the concept by the olive oil industry.
In 1997 and 1998, olive oil was the most adulterated agricultural product in the European Union, prompting the E.U.’s anti-fraud office to establish an olive-oil task force. (“Profits were comparable to cocaine trafficking, with none of the risks,” one investigator told me.)
